A STARS Lottery scam is targeting people in the local area, according to Moosomin RCMP

This is a spinoff of the common prize scam, where the victim receives a phone call and either has to confirm personal information, or pay some sort of "processing fee" in order to receive their prize.

Often, the "winner" hasn't even purchased a ticket for this lottery.

Police ask people to keep the following in mind:

-Known Lottery and sweepstakes companies will not ask for money up front in order to process your winning.

-Any fees, if there are any associated, will never be paid through MoneyGram, Western Union, or gift cards such as ITunes.

-If you did not buy a ticket for that lottery, then it's a scam.

-And most importantly, do not give out your personal information over the phone, no matter who the caller says they represent.

-If you think it's a scam, then it's likely a scam!

-It's okay to just hang up on them! You can also report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre 1-888-495-8501 or online through their website: http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/index-eng.htm
