For more than a quarter century, the annual rodeo has been a summer highlight in Moosomin.

The 26th annual Moosomin Rodeo is coming up this Friday and Saturday, July 5 and 6.

There will be a full weekend of rodeo events, and many other events adding to the weekend.

The rodeo weekend will kick off with a town council barbecue Friday at noon at the Tim Hortons Outdoor Eventplex. Councillors and town staff will be grilling burgers, with all proceeds going toward the wheelchair swing to be installed at Bradley Park.

Beer Gardens open at 4 pm Friday at the rodeo grounds, and the CCA/MRCA Rodeo will get under way at 7 pm, with wild pony races at intermission.

Rob McLane and Against the Grain will be providing entertainment in the beer gardens after the rodeo.

Moosomin’s firemen kick off Saturday’s events with their pancake breakfast at 7 am at the firehall.

The Chamber of Commerce parade goes at 10 am. The theme this year is Celebrate Summer!

Following the parade, at 11 a.m the Chamber of Commerce will host a pingpong ball drop on the parking lot of the Family Practice Centre.

Pingpong balls will be dropped from an aerial lift. One will be worth $250 in Mooosmin Bucks, one $100 and one $50. As well, many businesses will include pingpong balls for specials and giveaways.

Conexus Credit Union has one pingpong ball that can be exchanged for a $650 savings plan—Conexus will contribute $25 every two weeks for a year to the savings vehicle of the winner’s choice.

At 11:30 am, the Multicultural Celebration will begin at the Legion Hall. Moosomin groups from the Philippines, Ukraine, India, Honduras, and Korea will be serving up meals from their homelands, and there will be ethnic entertainment from their home countries as well.

At 12 noon the kids rodeo begins at the rodeo grounds. This is a new addition to the rodeo that was featured for the first time last year, with events including pole bending, barrel racing, calf riding, miniature bareback riding and goat undecorating. The event was a popular addition to the weekend last year.

At 3:30 pm, it’s the 2019 version of Moosomin Rodeo Idol, with local singers competing for prizes in several categories.

At 7 pm it’s the second night of CCA/MRCA Rodeo action at the rodeo grounds, with wild pony races at intermission.

The weekend will wrap up with a performance by Route 605 in the beer gardens.

Check out the rodeo section, the third section of this week’s World-Spectator, for more information on the rodeo weekend.
