Two men who are suspects in murders in northern BC are believed to have been in Saskatchewan and Manitoba in recent days. They were spotted in Meadow Lake in northwestern Saskatchewan on Sunday, and Manitoba RCMP said Tuesday they have reason to believe the pair have been in Gillam in northern Manitoba.
Childhood friends Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky of Port Alberni, BC, now in their late teens, were initially reported as missing, but they are now suspects in the homicides of a young couple shot in northern BC and in the suspicious death of an unidentified man whose body was found near their burnt-out truck.
Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, were last seen in northern Saskatchewan and may be driving a grey 2011 Toyota Rav4. Police say anyone who sees them should call 911 immediately and not approach them under any circumstances.
"We are asking the public: if you spot Kam or Bryer, consider them dangerous," Cpl. Janelle Shoihet said during a press conference from the Lower Mainland on Tuesday. "Take no action and immediately call 911."
RCMP said they may have changed their appearances.
The pair are suspected of shooting Australian Lucas Fowler, 23, and American Chynna Deese, 24.
The couple's bodies were discovered along the side of the Alaska Highway south of a popular tourist destination on July 15.
Four days after the bodies of Fowler and Deese were found, McLeod and Schmegelsky's burnt-out truck was discovered near the community of Dease Lake, B.C., more than 470 kilometres away from the first crime scene.
The body of an unidentified man in his 50s or 60s was found two kilometres south of that truck.
McLeod and Schmegelsky were initially considered to be missing persons. Their families hadn't heard from them in days and said the pair, friends since elementary school, had been travelling to Whitehorse in search of work.
