Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall says Gov. Gen. Julie Payette should avoid denigrating faiths that believe in a creator.

Wall says in a letter to Payette that he's concerned about her recent comments that some say mocked the religious beliefs of millions of Canadians.

The premier says in the letter that Payette is well qualified to serve as Governor General given her record of public service and professional achievements.

But he adds her comments do not meet the standard of conduct that comes with the position.

"Your Excellency, I want to assure you that you will be welcomed on your first and subsequent visits to Saskatchewan," Wall wrote to the Governor General

"But when you come to our province, I would encourage you to avoid denigrating or mocking the many adherents of faiths that believe in a Creator.

"The motto of our province is Multis e genitbus vires: From Many Peoples Strength

"For us, our motto is more than a creed, it is a never-ending aspiration to live up to its intent and spirit

"I would ask you, as our Governor General, to support us as we so endeavour by respecting all our peoples, including people of faith."
