A fundraiser is coming up this Saturday for Melanie Spencer in Rocanville.

Melanie, who is a mom with three young children, has been diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer, and has been undergoing chemo and radiation treatments in Regina.

The fundraiser includes a roast beef supper from 5-7 pm, a roller derby game at 7 pm, and a cabaret with the band Shifty Morgan at 9 pm.

Crystal Machniak, one of the organizers of the fundraiser, and a friend of Melanie’s, says she wanted to help in any way she could.

“Being a mother of three kids myself I just wanted to help out in any way that we could because there are a lot of expenses that she was going to have traveling back and forth for treatments,” she says. “Her family isn’t from Rocanville and I just wanted to show her what living in a small town in Saskatchewan was all about.”

Crystal says she got to know Melanie through roller derby, which is why a roller derby game is part of the fundraiser.

“She was very much into roller derby,” she says. “She travelled far to go to open scrimmages anywhere from Portage to Estevan to PA to Moose Jaw. The fundraiser will draw a lot of her derby family in, I would think.”

Crystal says it was tough for her to hear about Melanie’s diagnosis, and she’s hoping a lot of people come out to support her and her family on Saturday.

“Coming from a small town it is just great that everyone comes together when someone is in need,” she says.

What kind of person is Melanie?

“She is an amazing person, she is very kind hearted, an amazing mom, and an all around amazing person,” says Crystal. “She would do anything and everything for everyone else, and I guess it was our turn to give that all back to her.”
