Volunteers helping with flood relief

2014-07-22 21:13:17

Ron Bushman, a volunteer coordinator, with Mennonite Disaster Services is in Moosomin for a few days with volunteers to help with flood clean up.

Bushman, who is from Saskatoon, is located at the Co-op Gas Bar for the next five or six days.

Bushman previously helped out in High River, in April and May, and spent two weeks helping with cleanup in Gainsborough.

“People have friends and neighbours or somebody to help them out, so a lot of them are done already,” said Bushman. “But the ones that still haven’t are the more resistant to come forward. So we want to make sure we aren’t overlooking anybody before we move on.”

“Personally, I do this because our family has been helped out many times. On a greater scale, because our faith says that we look out for others. People are going to be a lot more likely to consider our faith if we help them unconditionally, and that’s what it’s really about. It’s also a broader perspective, that we’re not just here to serve ourselves but to help others.”

After Bushman is finished working in Moosomin, he plans to help with cleanup in Melville with Samaritan’s Purse.

Anyone looking for help with cleaning up after the floods can call Ron at 306-341-1098.
