The nomination deadline for 2016 Saskatchewan municipal and school board elections is coming up this Wednesday, Sept. 21.

In the town of Moosomin, 13 nomination forms had been picked up by Friday, and two completed nominations had been returned.
Next week’s newspaper will include a full rundown of who has been nominated in each town, village, RM, and school subdivision.
Where there is a need for an election, election day for board of education members, mayors and councillors in towns and villages, and for reeves and councillors in odd-numbered divisions in RMs is Wednesday, October 26.

Anyone can run for office if:
• On the day of the election, they are the 18 years or older;
• At the time you submit the nomination papers, they are a Canadian citizen and have resided in the municipality for at least three consecutive months immediately preceding the date on which nomination papers are submitted, and in Saskatchewan for at least six months immediately preceding the date on which nomination papers are submitted.

You cannot run for office if you:
• Are a Judge of a court
• Are an auditor or solicitor of the municipality

To be nominated for an elected position, a person must file nomination papers with the Returning Officer or designate during the specified nomination period.

Nomination papers must state the name and address of the person nominated and the office for which the person is being nominated.

In a town or village, for the position of mayor or councillor, the application must be signed by at least five voters of the municipality.

No person can be nominated as both Mayor and Councillor of the same municipality.

In an RM, for the position of reeve, the application must be signed by at least two voters of the municipality.

In an RM, for the position of councillor, the application must be signed by at least two voters in the division.

Candidates who have been nominated may withdraw their nomination at any time during the nomination period, up to the close of nominations.

The requirement to withdraw is for the Returning Officer to receive a written request to withdraw signed by the nominee and witnessed by two people or the Returning Officer or Associate Returning Officer.

A request to withdraw a nomination must be filed by the end of office hours on Thursday, September 22, 2016.
