Murray James Newman was born on July 29, 1937 on the family farm in Viscount, Sask. He passed away December 12, 2013.

After Murray graduated from high school, he worked with a construction crew for SaskTel for two years before going to Kindersley, Sask. as a switchboard man. He took many courses to further his knowledge of telephone equipment. Kindersley is where he met Lou and they started their journey of 54 and a half years together. Born in Kindersley were daughter Carolyn and son Cam. They lived in Kindersley for 11 years, in Wadena for four years, and moved to Moosomin July 1, 1973 when Murray became District Supervisor.

Murray retired in October of 1992 after 35 years with SaskTel, at age 55. While with SaskTel, Murray went on two overseas expeditions to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania where he taught the locals how to install and repair phones. After returning, he read and studied everything he could about computers, then taught computing to many people in the area.

In his years of dedication, he committed himself to coaching bantam and midget hockey in the old rink. He helped form the senior team and played rec hockey and old timers’ hockey until he was 61 years old. Murray was on town council for 18 years. He was president of the Recreation Board and treasurer of the town library board for several years. He was the business manager, along with Dr. Barrie Davidson, for Don Toth. He served as chairperson for the swimming pool, town hall, Communiplex and library boards. Murray drew out the plans for Lloyd Bradley Park and with the help of the Kinsmen worked on the baseball diamond named Murray Newman Field.

Three bikers from Moosomin biked to Calgary and back to raise money for the Communiplex. Murray took a trailer and acted as Mr. Fix-it and cook, and provided lodging as well. When the twinning of the highway took place he and Mayor Don Bradley met several times with the Department of Highways to secure the third exit into town, which we enjoy today.

Murray loved fishing. He planned fishing trips with his friends, family and neighbors. He especially enjoyed his time with his son, Cam, and five grandsons. He and Lou enjoyed taking in all the grandsons’ sports: soccer, football, lacrosse, baseball and hockey. He and Fred also had a great time keeping the Moosomin gopher population at bay.

His most recent accomplishment was being chairman for the Moosomin and District Integrated Health Facility Planning Committee. For years, Murray went to many meetings to raise money for the hospital, the wonderful place that cared for him in his last days.

We will miss you.

Lou, Carolyn, Dylan, Eric, Cam, Debbie, Kayden, Kyler and Bryden; brother Grant; several nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.
