Elwood John Perry

Elwood passed away peacefully with his wife Donalda of 71 years and daughter Debbi by his side on February 14, 2014 at the age of 89.
He is survived by his loving wife Donalda; Daughter: Debbi (Lawrence) Hydamacka; Sons: Donald and Roger (Judith), Grandchildren: Geoff, Graham, Tricia, Sandra, Wade, Lacey, Melanie, Michael and Michelle and 14 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, three sisters, two brothers, his youngest son, Erwin, and one grandson Mark Perry.
Born and raised at Rocanville, Sask., he married Donalda Godwin in 1943 and went off to war with the Regina Rifles Regiment where he landed on Juno Beach on D-Day 1944. He fought with his company through France, Germany, Holland and Belgium and was Honorably Discharged in 1946 and returned home to a new son and took over the family farm. He farmed until 1967 when they moved into town. They moved to East Trout Lake in 1970 where he and Donna owned and operated Bay Resort.
He continued his passion of hunting and fishing, up until last August when he went to East Trout Lake for the last time. He outdid us fishing that day as usual, and said that was the best day he had in a long time. One of his greatest joys was taking his grandchildren and great-grandchildren fishing or anybody else who enjoyed fishing. Elwood and Donna built their cabin themselves, working side by side as they always did and spent most of their time there from 1975 until last year.
Elwood and Donna eventually moved to Candle Lake after they sold the resort. Elwood enjoyed a variety of occupations: soldier, farmer, fire tower watchman, guard at White Gull jail camp, resort operator, campgrounds caretaker as well as woodworking.
Elwood was known for his love of woodworking. He spent many hours in his shop creating wonderful wood pieces ranging from toothpick holders and bowls to the urn he now rests in.
Elwood will be remembered for his sense of humour, ready laugh and willingness to help whomever needed his assistance. He had a friendliness and ease of conversation that made him new friends everywhere he went.
He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his family and all who knew him.
A graveside service will be held at the Candle Lake Cemetery this summer.
