It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Peter on Monday, July 14, 2014 at Wawota, Saskatchewan.

Peter is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Eileen, and four children, Donna (Ken Burnett), Kim (Grant Sheard), Jill Conway and Jeff Shatford; five grandchildren, Andrew Longstaff (Lindsey), Jonathon Longstaff, Matthew Burnett (Melissa Burchi), Mitchell Burnett (Yolandi Lombard) and Alaya Conway; two great-grandchildren, Maryn and Renley Longstaff; as well as Peter’s youngest sister Pat Sotkowy.

He was Uncle Pete to many nieces and nephews and their families from B.C. to Nova Scotia and several more in Georgia.

Peter was predeceased by his parents Seymour and Annie Shatford, seven sisters and one brother.

Peter was born and raised on the family farm near Walpole, Saskatchewan. Like many young farm boys of the time he stayed home from school until harvest was finished. Often his first day of a new school year wasn’t until late November. He completed his high school in Fairlight.

From a young age Peter loved to sing and play music at home with his mother, uncle and sisters, playing for dances in the district and later for many years with sister Irma and her family playing with The Olsons.

After leaving the farm he worked at many jobs, including teacher in a one room schoolhouse at Walpole and Doonside and an employee of Abitibi Paper Mill in Pine Falls, Manitoba. Peter enjoyed a professional music career for a few years, singing with The Gene Dlouhy Orchestra, travelling throughout Western Canada.

Peter and Eileen were married in 1955 and moved to Regina in 1956. Peter took a job with London Life Insurance where he made his career for 30 years. Peter was a member of Eastview Rotary for over 20 years, including one year as president of the club. In 1989 Peter and Eileen enjoyed a trip, with several members of the club, to International Rotary meetings in China.

After retirement Peter and Eileen enjoyed 14 winters in Hemet, California making new friends, golfing, playing cards and attending social events. He was proud to be a marshal in the Bob Hope Golf Classic for 10 years during that time. They moved back to Wawota in 2006 to spend time with family and friends in the area including Kenosee Lake.

Peter was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather (Papa), brother, uncle and friend to all that knew him.

A celebration of Peter’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Society of Saskatchewan, 610 Duchess Street, Saskatoon, Sask. S7K 0R1 or Deer View Lodge, 201 Wilfred Street, Wawota, Sask. S0G 5A0
