Marian passed away suddenly at the age of 79 years at her home in Sterling Manor, in the early morning of Sunday, August 17, 2014.

Marian was born, along with her twin sister Margaret, on the Down family farm on January 1, 1935. She was the 13th of 16 children born to George and Elizabeth Down.

Marian took all her schooling in Fairlight. At age 14 she went to work at the café in town while continuing to attend school. She completed grade 11.

Marian worked for a year at the Co-op in Rocanville and then returned to Fairlight to work at George Renwick’s grocery store.

Marian married Stanley Slobodian on July 3, 1954. They farmed at Fairlight until 1996. The family moved to Brandon from 1967 to 1975. While living there Marian worked as a waitress catering at hotel events, and then did janitorial work at Brandon University. She decided to take a hairdressing course at ACC in 1971. Marian continued to hairdress when the family moved back to Fairlight.

Marian was a big part of the Fairlight community. Over the years she belonged to the Legion’s Auxilliary, Community Club, Drop In Centre and of course the Bingo Committee.

In 2001 Marian and Stan moved to Sterling Manor in Moosomin where they resided until their passing.
Like the rest of the Down family, Marian loved sports, especially baseball. She was an avid Blue Jays fan. Curling was also a sport that she played competitively, skipping twice at the Saskatchewan Southern Playdowns.

Marian loved playing cards, crafts, dancing, crosswords, puzzles, gambling and gardening.
Marian will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her four children, Brenda (Steve), Bonnie (Robert), Wanda and Judy (Rick); her 11 grandchildren Tim, Angela, Ashley, Darla, Jenna, Jeff (Samantha), Chelsea, Malori, Brody, Carmen and Andrew. She had one great-grandchild, Maia Marien.

Marian is also survived by her twin sister Margaret Hoff and sisters Dorothy Chay, Jean Marshall, Florence White, and Blanche Venne; brothers Stan (Carol) and Donald (Marg); sisters-in-law Yvonne, Mona, Barbara and Stella Slobodian; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ed and Annette Slobodian; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Marian was predeceased by her husband, Stanley; parents George and Elizabeth (Hanley); sisters Daisy, Edith and Edna; and brothers Albert, Frank, Fred, Ronald and John.

Marian touched the hearts of many people. She will be sadly missed.
