Martha Maria Ekert was born in Olssevicach, Poland on May 10, 1922. In 1928 her family came to Canada by ship. Even in recent years, she would recount details of crossing the Atlantic Ocean. She was one of eight children. The Ekert family lived in Vibank, Wood Hill and settled in Wapella on their own farm.

As a young woman, she and her cousin moved to Vancouver where Martha worked as a nurses’ aid in the Vancouver General Hospital.

She returned to Saskatchewan where she met and later married Jack Warner on July 7, 1950. They farmed in the Fletwode district and raised their children there. In 1972 they sold their farm and purchased the Kennedy Drake hotel. Martha managed the café part of the business until they sold in 1976. After selling the hotel, Martha and Jack took jobs with Roesslein Construction. The crew gravelled roads and stayed in many different areas. Martha was the camp cook. They made their home in Carlyle. Later they managed the Esso in Carlyle. In the late ‘70s they worked at the Skyline Motor Inn where Martha cooked. They travelled by motor home to the Yukon to visit their son Jack and his family, and while there they accepted jobs and extended their stay. Martha worked at the bakery. They settled back to Carlyle where they both had casual employment guarding at the RCMP cells. Their last years in Carlyle were spent in the Mountain Drive Apartments.

They moved to Moosomin in the late 1990s where they purchased a home which they extensively renovated. Their yard was fully landscaped as well. They spent many happy years living close to Martha’s siblings Helen, Paul and Emil. In recent years, Jack and Martha lived at Broadview House and later at Broadview Centennial Lodge. Martha passed away on February 13, 2015.

When Martha wasn’t working, she spent her time landscaping, crocheting and knitting. Martha always had beautiful yards; well treed, full of flowers with green lawns and healthy vegetable gardens. She often picked wild berries and preserved them and her home grown fruit and vegetables. Many large family meals and get-togethers were planned and prepared by Martha. She and Jack also enjoyed travelling. Two memorable trips were by train to Idaho and Toronto to visit family.

Martha was predeceased by her husband Jack; son Brian; parents Michael and Julia Ekert; sister Olga and brothers Oscar, Art, Emil and Paul.

She is survived by her brother Willie Ekert and her sister Helen McGimpsey; Brian’s wife Anne Bezanson; her children Glenna (Joe) Nicolay, Michael (Dianne) Warner, Jack (Cathy) Warner and Cindy (Jerry) Bell; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. If friends wish, donations in Mom’s memory can be made to the Fletwode Hermon United Church, c/o Irvin Markle, P.O. Box 10, Kennedy, Sask. S0G 2R0.
