If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Parkinson Society or to a charity of your choice, in memory of Fred.

Frederick Joseph James was born on January 6, 1927 to William and Olive James on the James family farm at Welwyn, Saskatchewan. He was the youngest of seven children. When Fred was 21 years of age, his father passed away so he stayed at home and continued to farm with his mother.

On his 24th birthday, 64 years ago, he married the love of his life, Ferne Bayless. They were blessed with four children: Marney, Marilyn, Bill and Joan. Fred and Ferne maintained a healthy work-life balance. Fred would work hard on the farm but he always had time to coach his kids’ ball teams or go curling.

Fred loved music and played banjo with the local band when he was young. When the sisters came over there would be singing around the piano, a ball game, a big meal and then a card game. This always included a healthy dose of laughter. Fred also had a strong belief in community. He was a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows and was always willing to help at the church, rink or Old Welwyn School.

When grandfathering became a role, he jumped in with his usual enthusiasm and humor. He would be the first out to throw around the baseball and taught them the finer points of cribbage and UNO! They drove across the two provinces to band concerts, soccer games and graduations.

Fred and Ferne semi-retired in Moosomin 20 years ago. In 1988 they had received the Centennial Farm Award for having the farm in the James name for 100 years. They were proud to be able to continue that history as Bill took over the responsibility of the farm so that they could start traveling.

Fred will be missed by many, especially his loving wife, Ferne; their children Marney (Archie), Marilyn (Marvin), Bill and Joan (Murray); the grandchildren Sarah (Jeremy), Adrienne, Jonathan, Raina, Julia, Leon, Robert and Anna; and great-grandchildren Caitlyn, Ian and Marissa. Fred is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harry and Jeanne Bayless; brother-in-law Harlow Gough and many nieces and nephews.

Fred was predeceased by his parents William and Olive James; brother Ted and wife Lorna Ward; sisters and spouses Blanche and Frank Taylor, Beatrice and Gregor Jamieson, Ethel and Cameron Jamieson, Josephine and Tommy Lynd, Pearl and Robert Bilkey; sister-in-law Doreen Gough and brother-in-law Vince Chilcott.
