Peacefully, with family at her side, Hortense Fouillard passed away Friday, August 5, 2016.

Hortense was born in Saint-Jean Baptiste on April 8, 1929, the fourth child of seven children born to Hector and Aldéa Fillion. Hortense attended a country school at Routledge until Grade 8 and completed her Grade 9-12 at St. Joseph Academy in St. Boniface. She taught school on permit at Ellice in 1948 before enrolling for a one-year teacher’s training course at Tuxedo.

In 1950, she was hired to teach at Ste Rose du Lac where she remained for two years. She married Denis Fouillard on September 27, 1952 in Virden R.C. Church with Father Schrieber officiating.

In 1953, they purchased land, began farming and started a family, having thirteen children in nineteen years!

Hortense spent many years substitute teaching, milking cows, delivering milk, raising chickens, turkeys, pigs, growing large gardens to share with her family and friends.

She also did an enormous amount of cooking and canning. Her door was always open to her many acquaintances for a cup of tea and soup of the day. It was never a huge task for Hortense to feed 30-50 people and her meals were always prepared and served with great pride.

Hortense was an active member in the community and the church with a strong devotion to her Catholic faith.

She was always ready to help and support community events as she served on the Ladies Auxiliary Committee for many years.

Hortense was also a substitute teacher. During her last year of teaching, at the age of 77, she had 24 grandchildren at École Saint-Lazare – mission accomplished!

She loved having her family come visit and hosted huge family gatherings with numerous children and grandchildren. She enjoyed playing cards with her family, friends and teaching her grandchildren her favourite card games. She was especially proud of her 84 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always had some treats to give them from her treasure drawer.

Unfortunately on January 22, 2012, Hortense suffered a stroke which left her paralyzed on the left side. She took residence at Sunnyside Manor in Birtle where she received deep caring and compassion.

She leaves to mourn her 10 children: Edgar (Nicole Bernier), Edmond (Debbie), Lionel (Sharon), Angelo (Norma), Aimé (Marlene), Anita (Terry Dupont), Denis (Liza), Charles (Karen), Adrien (Stacey) and Carmelle (Jody Cook); two sons-in-law: Johnny Lemoine and Larry Fleury; 50 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She also leaves to mourn her sister, Hélène Montsion, and three brothers: Côme (Jeanne), Lionel and Robert (Darlene).

Hortense was predeceased by her parents, Hector and Aldéa Fillion, brother Aimé, sister Stella. She was also predeceased by her husband Denis; three daughters: Léontine Fouillard (1968), Sarah Fleury (1999) and Rosalie Lemoine (2010) as well as three grandchildren: Léontine Fleury (1987), Gaetan Fleury (1994) and Anne-Marie Fleury (1999) and great-grandson Matheu Mryglod (2006).

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at the Roman Catholic Church in St. Lazare with Deacon Conrad Plante and Father René Digba officiating. Interment followed in the St. Lazare Cemetery. The beautiful ceremony of Hortense’s life was carried out by Hortense’s family members, including singers, lectors and pallbearers. It was a very special tribute to a very special woman. Braendle-Bruce Funeral Services were in charge of arrangements.
