In loving memory of Margaret Joyce Smith, beloved mother and grandmother, who passed away on October 8, 2016 at the Southeast Integrated Care Centre, Moosomin, SK after losing a brief battle with cancer.

Margaret was born June 8, 1931 in Moosomin Union Hospital where she was one of nine children born to Louis and Susan Verbaan. Margaret grew up on the Verbaan family farm west of Red Jacket.

Her passion with horses were part of her daily life.

Margaret attended the local Red Jacket School through grade nine. Margaret continued her education in Saskatoon and graduated in October of 1959 as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Margaret started her nursing career at Indian Head Union Hospital.

In November of 1960 Margaret married her true love Keith Smith of Moosomin and returned to Moosomin where she continued her nursing career as well as farming with Keith. Margaret was very passionate about both her nursing career and the farm. Marg loved the outdoors and working with the cattle.

After Keith’s passing in 2011, Margaret continued to enjoy the outdoors and the family farm and often spent hours at the farm always helping out and spending time with her family. She loved to go on quad rides right up to the last year of her life.

Margaret was especially fond of all her neighbours both in Moosomin and on the farm. Past and present, she would always comment to anyone she met how she had the best neighbours in the world.

Margaret was predeceased by her loving husband, Keith, of 50 years.

Margaret is survived by her loving son Ken (Gail) Smith of Moosomin; daughters Marlene (Tom) Botterill of Fleming and Wendy (Wally) Tomyk of Regina; granddaughters Chelsey and Kaitlyn Smith; grandsons Dylan Schuler and Cory and Devon Tomyk.

A private family grave side service was held at Moosomin South Cemetery on Friday, October 21, at 2 p.m. followed by a come and go tea at 2:30 p.m. at the Legion Hall in Moosomin, SK.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, in memory of Margaret.

We would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and staff at both the Moosomin Hospital and long term care home for the excellent care they provided to Mom for the last period of her life. We would also like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and staff at the Wolseley long term care home for the care they gave Mom during her short stay there.

Margaret will be sadly missed and forever remembered.
