Arnetta Caroline (Hammond) Swallow passed away peacefully at the Southeast Integrated Care Centre (SEICC) in Moosomin on December 9, 2020 at the age of 95.

She was predeceased by her husband Gordon Swallow, her parents Henry and Annie (Franklin) Hammond, her siblings Russell, Melvin, Mabel, Clifford, Elsie and Chester and is survived by her brother Leonard of Coquitlam, BC. She is also survived by three sons, Kerry (Liz) of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan; Darryl (Catherine) of White Rock, BC; and Brent (Kimberly) of Edmonton, Alberta. Arnetta is also survived by eight grandchildren, Lisa (Rob) Vogelgesang, Kimberly (Cameron) Deaver, Sara (Dan) Nelken, Kirsten (Greg) Yanicki, Phillip (Sierra) Swallow, Bryce, Julia and Sylvanna Swallow. Arnetta is also survived by eleven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and many nieces, nephews and their families.

Arnetta was born in Walpole, Saskatchewan and moved with her family to the Maryfield area where she attended and graduated from Maryfield School. She met Gordon Swallow in Maryfield and they were married after Gordon was discharged from the Navy in 1945. Gordon and Arnetta initially farmed South of Maryfield then in 1962 moved to the “north place” on the Pipestone Valley North of Maryfield. In 1977, they sold the farm and moved to Moosomin.

Arnetta always had a “green thumb” and was especially proud of her flowers and plants. She was always creative, enjoyed working on numerous arts and crafts activities and was avid about keeping a daily journal. Having grown up in the 1930’s, she was thrifty by nature, but was always fussy about what she wore and how she looked.

In retirement, Gordon and Arnetta built a cottage at Moosomin Lake and loved having their children, grandchildren, friends and relatives around them at the lake, swimming, boating, water-skiing, sailing, and fire-watching.

For what she would describe as “the best ten years of their life”, Gordon and Arnetta spent their summers at the Moosomin Lake cottage and winters as “Winter Texans” in Harlingen, Texas. There they enjoyed a very active social life with their circles of Canadian friends and American friends. They loved short trips across the Rio Grande into Mexico and longer trips to Africa and the Caribbean.

Both Arnetta and Gordon were active in the Royal Canadian Legion and Auxiliary in both Maryfield and Moosomin including serving as President of each organization.

After Gordon’s passing in 2010, Arnetta continued living in their apartment in Moosomin until December of 2013 when health issues forced her to move into the SEICC in Moosomin where she lived for almost seven years.

Due to the current pandemic limitations, a private family gathering and interment in the Maryfield Cemetery, will be held when it is appropriate to do so.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the SEICC–Moosomin for their caring and dedication to protect our most vulnerable, especially under very challenging circumstances. Their patient care for Arnetta is greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Ashley and Karen who were terrific with helping arrange video calls to her bedside so family members could see and talk to Arnetta virtually at the very end of her life.
