Delbert Arthur Nixon was born on August 5, 1939 on the home farm to parents, Jean and Arthur Nixon. He was the eldest of six children: Margaret, Donald, Pat, Val and Donna. Delbert grew up in the Kendalton District and went to Kendalton School and Wapella High School. Once finished school he worked on the family farm, took a welding course at Kelsey in Saskatoon, spent some time as a welder’s helper on the pipeline, and worked as a tow truck driver as well as worked at a tire shop.

In 1957, Delbert met the love of his life, Sharon Jean Johnson. They were married on November 7, 1964 and started their life together in Saskatoon. In 1966, their first child, Edward Derrick, was born. In March of 1967, they moved back to the farm where Delbert worked rented land, while helping his father. In 1968, Richard Dale was born and two years later Julie Dawn arrived. Jean and Arthur Nixon retired to Wapella in 1973 and Delbert, Sharon and their three children took over the operation of the family farm. Delbert always took pride in many things including his farm, his children’s activities, the community, and family events.

In 1993, Delbert and Sharon welcomed children by marriage when Dale married Patty-Jo, and Julie married Kelly. Delbert became a proud grandfather for the first time in 1994 when Amanda was born. Adding to Delbert’s pride, Cody, his first grandson, was born in 1995 followed by Tristen in 1996 and Reise in 1999. In 2005, Delbert and Sharon extended their family once again when Derrick married Elaine. Delbert was blessed with two more grandchildren, Mason in 2006, and Zoe in 2008.
In 2002, Delbert and Sharon left the family farm and moved to Moosomin. He continued to work with Dale at Nixon Electric which he had started doing seven years earlier.

Delbert enjoyed music and he loved to dance. Over the years he supported and enjoyed his children’s and grandchildren’s activities. If a grandchild was participating he was usually there: skating, swimming, dance, volleyball, basketball, hockey, softball. His interest in football increased this past year when his grandsons became involved in the sport. Delbert spent many hours playing and watching curling. He was an avid fan of the Predators softball team. From the time his children were young, Delbert loved to go camping. His enjoyment increased when the entire family would go on the annual family camping trips. Delbert loved to watch his grandchildren participate in water sports and was even known to take a tube ride himself with them. Then there were the card games: Skipbo tournaments at the lake, many games of rummy and crib, a game of war or fish with the young ones or canasta or aggravation with family or friends. Delbert could always brighten someone’s day with a joke, a visit, or even just a smile. A quick trip to the store would turn into a two hour visiting session with everyone he ran into.

Delbert and Sharon were fortunate enough to travel to Cancun, Hawaii, and most recently, Phoenix last New Year’s. They made many trips to Saskatoon, Stony Plain and down the back alley to Carleton Street.

In 2010, Delbert’s health began to fail. He faced many health challenges with a courageous positive attitude and with the support of his family. After a long battle, Delbert’s earthly journey ended on October 4, 2013 with his family by his side. He will be remembered for his unconditional love and support that he gave so readily to his family and friends and his incredible sense of humour as well as his smile and twinkle in his eyes.

A service to celebrate Delbert’s life was held on October 9, 2013 at St. Andrew’s United Church, Wapella with Dawn Wilson officiating. Interment at the Wapella Cemetery followed.

He was predeceased by his brother Donald, his nephew Kelly, his parents, Jean and Arthur, his sister Margaret, and his brother-in-law Fred.

He leaves to mourn his wife Sharon, his sons, Derrick (Elaine) and Dale (Patty-Jo), his daughter Julie (Kelly), his grandchildren: Amanda, Cody, Tristen, Reise, Mason, and Zoe. Delbert also leaves to mourn his sisters: Pat, Val, Donna (Al), his sister in-law Patty (David), along with aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
