Ken McCannel, beloved husband of Ileen McCannel, passed away at the Moosomin Southeast Integrated Care Centre on Friday, September 27, 2013 at the age of 84 years.

Ken was born on July 5, 1929 to parents Archie and Susan in the Doonside district. He was raised on the family farm with his three brothers, Ted, Gib and Alec.

In 1959, Ken left the farm to work at the Moosomin Co-op in the lumber department. During this time he met and married Ileen. He continued to work with the Co-op and went on to manage the Indian Head and Kipling locations.

Farming was where Ken’s heart was, though, and in 1965 Ken and Ileen moved to their own farm in the Fairlight district with daughters Colleen and Beth. During the next 26 years the farm operations included milking cows, raising pigs and beef cattle and growing a variety of crops. Family and friends were always welcome at the farm and many occasions were celebrated by all including the McCannel family reunion in 1989.

Ken and Ileen retired to Moosomin in 1991 where they continued to grow a large garden and loved hosting many card parties with their friends. Ken participated in curling and cross-country skiing and putting his carpentry skills to work. Many people enjoyed the woodworking projects that Ken created such as clocks, cabinets, tables and tea carts.

Ken is predeceased by his parents, Archie and Susan, and brother Alec. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Ileen; daughter Colleen and grandsons Nicolas, Corey and Graham; daughter Beth (Stuart); and brothers Ted and Gib (Willy); and by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Interment occurred at Manson Cemetery, Manson, Manitoba on October 3, with Reverend Joan Rennie-Laing officiating and Ferne Katzberg piping.

Memorial donations in memory of Ken can be made to the Moosomin Long Term Southeast Integrated Care Centre or the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

Ken was a true gentleman. He was kind, patient, generous in spirit and always offered a helping hand.
