Ray Percy of Whitewood passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2013.
Ray was born to Ralph and Ella Percy in Fleming, Sask. on September 10, 1927.
Although his first career was in the trucking business, which he began at 14 years of age, his primary source of enjoyment during those years was baseball, playing for both of Fleming’s junior and senior baseball teams.
In 1950 he met Edith Franklin who would become his passion and his partner for the rest of his life. Ray and Edith moved to Brandon where he worked for Western Grocers and they began their life as a family.
In 1963, Ray, Edith and their children, Dwight, Heather and Carol, moved to Whitewood which would become home for the rest of Ray’s life. Alongside a busy schedule with their kids’ hockey, figure skating and many other activities, the Percy’s life also revolved around the grocery and dry goods store which they managed and then owned and operated for three decades. When family and work were combined with endless volunteerism in almost every organization in town, Ray’s life was busy.
With Whitewood always acting as home base, Ray and his family had their weekends revolve around their cabin at Round Lake. As his kids grew up, he found time for the sports he enjoyed so much-fishing, curling and playing golf, alongside watching baseball and CFL football.
After selling the store, Ray and Edith made their winter home in Mesa, Arizona where their circle of friends expanded even further.
Ray lived a great life surrounded by many friends, a loving wife, children who will always love and respect him, grandchildren who will always carry wonderful memories of him, and great-grandchildren who are the fortunate beneficiaries of a great legacy.
He is survived by his loving wife Edith, his children Dwight (Theresa), Heather (Randy) and Carol (Keith), his grandchildren Trevor, Evan, Meghan, Cameron, Jillian, Hillary and his great-grandchildren Noah, Hannah, Jackson, Ireland, Bentley.
The funeral service was held at the Whitewood United Church on Saturday, November 30 with the Rev. Barb Wilkins officiating.
