Robert David McGonigal, of Elkhorn, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at the age of 84 years, after a brief battle with cancer.
David was born in Moosomin on September 3, 1939. He was the eldest of Robert and Jean McGonigal’s 10 children.
He married Nora on July 14, 1962 and had two beautiful daughters, Wendy and J.C.
Dave worked as a mechanic on the pipeline for several years before moving back to Elkhorn where he took up farming. He then worked at the Kola Feed Mill doing maintenance until retirement.
Dave volunteered much of this time to the community of Elkhorn putting in extensive hours to ensure the rink was always ready for its players. He was a lifetime fan of the Elkhorn Canadians and Toronto Blue Jays and enjoyed spending his spare time fishing, dancing, golfing and working as a farm hand. He loved supporting the local sports teams and spent countless hours in the stands.
Dave was predeceased by mother Jean (nee Donald); father Robert; brothers Jim, Dennis, Harvey, Winston, Bert and sister Kathleen.
Dave is survived by wife Nora (nee Shoemaker); daughters Wendy (Kevin), J.C. (Dan); grandchildren Chris (Chelsea), Brandy (Kevin), Brittany (Shawn), Dustin (Joelle), Tyson (Katelyn), and Kirsten; great-grandchildren Dominic, Tucker, Sawyer, Cooper, and Caden; siblings John (Vicky), Helen, and Evelyn (Harold) and many treasured nieces and nephews.
Dave was a very strong-minded, driven, hard-working man that gave his all to every challenge he undertook and will be missed dearly by those that knew him.
Dave’s family would like to extend a sincere thank you for all of the amazing care Dave received during his final days.
A graveside service to honour Dave will be held on Saturday, March 30 at the Elkhorn Cemetery at 2 pm Manitoba time. All are welcome to join the family at that time.
