A Starr that burnt out too fast
Even though her dash (-) was not long enough for any of us, she did make the most of it.
Starr Marlene was born on December 20, 1946, to Cecil and Dorthy Bernard.
Mom grew up on the family farm a happy child, even though she did suffer from many health issues.
Mom loved sports from a young age, helping on the farm where she could and being around the animals.
Mom married the love of her life, Mickey Szoradi on May 6, 1967, and they had 41 wonderful years together.
They started their life out together in the city of Winnipeg, then moved to Lockport where they were blessed with Robert, Kimberly and Karin. They knew they wanted to raise their children in the country, so they moved back to Elkhorn and took over the family farm from Mike and Verna in 1980.
Mom always was a hard worker between raising the kids, running the house, looking after the yard/garden, helping with farm work and chores—whether that was driving the baler, or the grain truck, feeding cattle, pulling calves in the middle of the night or tagging and inoculating calves. Our mother was never shy of working hard all while continuing to work off the farm as well.
Mom had a few different jobs during her lifetime. At one point mom and dad worked together at Parkside Ford in Winnipeg and others were clerical work for a company back in Winnipeg, working at the CIBC bank in Elkhorn, running the Elkhorn Rink with Dave and Nora McGonigal or going back to school at the age of 41 to become a Healthcare Aid and working until she officially retired at the age of 71.
Many people have shared stories with me about how she was so kind, compassionate, patient, and downright loving to the residents that she looked after over the years.
Mom had a love of all creatures, big and small, and would always say no more pets/animals but extra ones always seemed to make it into the house or the yard.
After dad passed away, she stayed on the farm and her love of travel really took off.
She enjoyed a few bus trips to Nashville and other popular places in the U.S., a hot holiday in Cuba and Hawaii, road trips to Alberta, B.C., a cruise to Alaska, a trip with Karin to celebrate her 65th birthday in Las Vegas, and traveling all the way up North to Baffin Island to visit Kim and the girls.
Spending time with family and friends was very important to mom, whether it be to celebrate a holiday or the annual extended family camping trip to Oak Lake, the trips to Deloraine to see her brother-in-law Allan and sister-in-law Bernie, back to Selkirk to visit friends, or just playing cards in our kitchen on the weekends.
Mom loved to play cards and board games and passed that love on to us and her grandchildren.
Mom was very involved in our sports and after school activities, from driving to practices and games/tournaments and competitions, concerts, helping us practice and encouraging us, even when we lost.
Mom loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whether it was baking with them, playing cards/board games, colouring, watching their sports or just hanging out.
In mom’s spare time she carried on her mother Dorthy’s passion for knitting and crocheting. Besides knitting many beautiful items for her family, she also received many requests from friends for her talents. She loved getting the latest Mary Maxim magazine in the mail.
As mom’s health started to decline, she moved off the family farm in 2019 to the Elkwood Manor where she lived until her sad passing on March 8, 2024, at the age of 77.
Mom was laid to rest beside her loving husband on March 15 at the Elkhorn Cemetery.
We would like to thank the staff at the Elkwood Manor for the wonderful care she received over the years and to the Carscadden Funeral Chapel in helping with mom’s final journey.
“If I could have just one more day and wishes did come true, I’d spend every glorious moment side by side with you.”
Miss you forever.
Love Karin, Kim, and Robert
