Martin Alvin Nixon, 83, of Moosomin, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at the Southeast Integrated Care Centre.

Martin was born in Wapella on April 5, 1930 to Alvin and Flora Nixon. He attended school in Wapella then headed east to Ontario to work in the bush camps cutting timber.

He married the love of his life, Carrie Fergusson, on October 30, 1952 and moved to the family farm where they eventually raised five children.

Martin managed lumber yards for North American Lumber in Minnedosa and Transcona, Manitoba, Dryden and Vermillion Bay, Ontario, and Melville, Saskatchewan before returning to Wapella in 1961 to purchase a hardware business from his uncle George Markham. Martin and Carrie operated Nixon Hardware along with the family farm in the Kendalton district northeast of Wapella, until retirement.

Martin is survived by his son Alvin Nixon and wife Lynn Heikkila of Wapella, daughters Holly Nixon of Regina and Sandra Nixon of Moosomin, grandchildren Erin Nixon (Jared) of Vancouver, B.C. and Adam Nixon of Calgary. He is also survived by his wife of 61 years, Carrie Nixon (Fergusson), sisters Florence Dolman of Craik, Saskatchewan, Eleanor Sedgwick of Kenora, Ontario, Joni Nixon of Vernon, B.C., as well as his many nieces and nephews.

Martin was preceded in death by his parents Alvin and Flora, son Colin, daughter Judy, and sisters Freda McIntyre, Verna Ulmer, and Ruth Peterson.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful and caring staff at Long Term Care, SEICC for their kindness and support through dad’s final days.

A memorial service and celebration of Martin’s life was held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the Wapella United Church.

Memorial donations may be made in Martin’s memory to the Wapella United Church, Moosomin and District Health Care Foundation (Long Term Care), Canadian Diabetes Association, or the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan.
