George William (Geordie) Smith was born November 2, 1932, on the farm southeast of Maryfield, to William G. and Alma M. Smith. Geordie passed away April 18, 2014 at Broadview Centennial Lodge.

He grew up on the farm and attended school at Hillcrest and helped his father on the farm. As a boy the family had a collie dog that he spent many hours with. As he got older, he purchased a truck for hauling grain which he did for several farmers in the community.

In 1954 he met Verla McAdoo and they were married November 3, 1955. He moved off the farm and worked in Stockton’s store for the winter but decided he would rather work in the grain elevator business. He moved around the province for a couple of years and ended up in Watrous, Saskatchewan. While there he began working in an autobody shop. He quit the elevator and worked autobody, paint and repair for five years.

In 1962 he moved his family back to Maryfield and worked a couple of jobs, driving school bus and working for the Village of Maryfield. In 1975 he went to work for the Department of Highways until he retired in 1992. After his retirement, he enjoyed several years of wintering in south Texas.

Geordie enjoyed golfing and went out with the guys in Texas regularly. He enjoyed camping outings and the guys would go golfing, so his clubs were always handy. He also enjoyed his Lodge work with the Masons and was a Past Master, and in the Order of the Eastern Star he was a Past Grand Patron of Saskatchewan. He was also a member of the Moosomin Shrine Club. Geordie spent many hours in his workshop doing woodwork, especially intarsia and lathe work.

Geordie and Verla have two sons, Robert George and James William, and a daughter who died in infancy. Geordie leaves to mourn his loss his wife Verla of 58 years, son James, son Robert and wife Brenda, grandchildren Desirea (Chris), Trinda and Joel and great-grandchildren Adam, Glacia and Mia.

A memorial service for Geordie was held Wednesday, April 23 at 2 p.m. at the Associated Gospel Church in Maryfield, under the capable care of Carscadden Funeral Chapels.
