Dorothy Polvi

Dorothy Polvi of Whitewood, Saskatchewan, beloved wife of Arnold Polvi, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at the age of 77 years.
Dorothy Mae Lien was born May 31, 1938 at home in Vancouver, B.C. She has one brother who is several years her junior. Her family moved to Edberg, Alta. when she was young, and she lived there until leaving home at 16, when she headed for Edmonton.
At 19 Dorothy married. She had three children: Tracy, Laurie and Brad. Dorothy was a very proud and loving grandma to her four grandchildren: Sushan Smith, Lilei Smith, Celeste Morgan and Carl Morgan.
In 1989, she married Arnold Polvi and became a real farm wife. She drove the tractor and combine, working alongside him. He was her spark; it was to him she reached in her last days, and it was he who brought a smile to her face.
Dorothy loved trying new things. Over the years she drove a school bus, raised rabbits, led Girl Guides, curled and rode horses. She worked many years at the Centennial Special Care Home in Esterhazy. While there, she was a CUPE union leader working diligently on behalf of the employees.
Dorothy enjoyed taking painting classes and especially painting with oil paints. Other favorite crafts were paper tole and cross stitch, many of which are displayed in her home. Photography, gardening, and her flower beds were also passions. Throughout the years Dorothy had been strong in her faith and active in her church serving in whatever capacity asked of her, most recently serving as treasurer.
Dorothy is survived by her husband Arnold; children Tracy (Vinnie) Morgan, Laurie Smith and Brad (Carmen) Smith; grandchildren Sushan, Lilei, Celeste and Carl; her brother Rodney and nephew Travis; sisters-in-law Wilma, Vi, and Alice; brother-in-law John; and all the extended Polvi family.
Dorothy will be deeply missed by her family and her friends.
Dorothy’s funeral service was held Saturday, June 20, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in New Finland with the Rev. Wilma Woods and Rev. Cliff Knutson officiating. Eulogies were shared by Sushan Smith and Rev. Cliff Knutson, and Dorothy’s favorite song, "You Raise Me Up," was played in remembrance. The organist, Jean Dancsok, led in the hymns "The Lord’s My Shepherd," "How Great Thou Art" and "Beautiful Saviour." All those who touched Dorothy’s life were considered honorary pallbearers and her son Brad Smith was the urn bearer. Interment took place in the New Finland Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home in Whitewood.
