Bert was born in Wawanesa, Manitoba and died in Moosomin, Saskatchewan at the age of 100 years, 7 months. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Leo Buehler in 1994, and by their infant son David in 1956. She is survived by four sons: Ivan (Cécile) of Humboldt, Keith (Colleen) of Saskatoon, Carl of Moosomin, and Peter (Amy) of Brandon; seven grandchildren: Ian (Katie Hill) of Calgary, David of Saskatoon, Lise (Taylor) Ritz of Blucher, Breanne of Saskatoon, Andrew (Mariah Carlsen) of Victoria, Nevin (Michelle Gilchrist) of Saskatoon, and Emily (Andrew) Humphreys of Brandon; and four great-grandchildren: April and Landon Ritz, and Rosalyn and Autumn Humphreys.

Bertha, the third child of Reuben and Lizzie Ann (Galbraith) Austin, was raised in Radville with three sisters and two brothers. She attended Normal School then took a teaching job at Prairie Bell School near Fairlight. There she met her husband who ran the family hotel. She moved into Fairlight to teach and Leo proposed marriage. They were married in a private Regina ceremony on December 31, 1944. They moved to Moosomin in December 1946 to take over the Queen’s Hotel, which they ran for 21 years before moving into a suite in the former R.D. McNaughton building. In 1988 they bought and moved into their first and only house.

Bert was active in St. Alban’s Anglican Church as a member of the Women’s Auxiliary, the Guild, and the Choir. She also devoted time and commitment to the Order of the Eastern Star. She also acted in several community theatre plays. For years, until she was 94, she volunteered in Moosomin’s long-term care homes helping to teach “the old people” how to paint.

To her family she was the consummate mother and teacher. She was inquisitive and loved to learn new things (especially about science), read, write and paint. Above all she was a storyteller. Her favourite beginning was “If I have told you this one before just tell me and I won’t tell you again.” As the years went by, most often she had told us before, we told her so, and she told it again anyway.

We all miss you.

The family also wishes to thank the staffs of Broadview Centennial Lodge and the Southeast Integrated Care Centre in Moosomin for their kind work in caring for Bertha.

Donations may be made to the Moosomin and District Health Care Foundation – Spiritual Care Fund.

A Service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Alban’s Anglican Church, Moosomin with Rev. Dr. Trish McCarthy officiating.
