A Memorial Service for Evelyn will be held at Knox Metropolitan Church, Lorne St and Victoria Ave., Regina SK at 10:30 AM on Saturday May 28, 2016. Luncheon to follow in the church hall.

Evelyn Mary Catherine Brown was born in the Whitewood/Wapella area on April 25th, 1922 to Catherine (nee MacDonald) and Thomas Balfour Brown.

Her early years were spent growing up on the family farm nearby her grandparents, James and Catherine MacDonald and situated near the beautiful Pipestone valley.

In 1931, the Brown family moved into the town of Whitewood where Evelyn and her siblings, Edna, Earl and Lloyd, went to school. Evelyn graduated grade XII following which she and her sister Edna moved to Ottawa.

In May 1942, Evelyn and her sister Edna moved from Whitewood to Ottawa where she worked for the RCMP in the Identification Bureau (Fingerprint Department).

In 1948 Evelyn returned to Regina to attend the Grey Nuns nurses training program. She graduated in 1951 as a Registered Nurse.
On November 10th, 1951, Evelyn married Ruel Amos Phillips of Radville, Saskatchatchewan.

Evelyn and Ruel Phillips had four children: Robert James (1952), Janice Elizabeth (1954), William Howard (1960) and David John (1963).
Evelyn and Ruel divorced but remained in contact over the years until Ruel’s death in 1996.

Evelyn’s nursing career, began in 1951 and she worked for most of the remaining 36 years until her retirement in 1987. Her work included time at the Grey Nuns hospital, Regina, Regina Pioneer Village care home, Administrative positions with Provincial and Federal Government, Departments of Health, Nursing Director at Balfour Gusway Alcoholic Treatment Centre, Regina, Director of Care at Mutchmore Lodge, Regina, and Director of Care at Moosomin Senior’s Lodge until her retirement in 1987.

After her retirement, Evelyn returned to Regina and moved into an apartment on Robinson Street where she enjoyed taking classes at the University of Regina Centre for Continuing Education and volunteering with various St. Andrews Church groups. She maintained a large network of friends through her church and Alanon connections and travelled to visit friends and family in the Maritimes, Ontario, Winnipeg, Qu’Appelle and LaRonge in Northern Saskatchewan.

She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disesase in 1998 and as her health deteriorated, she moved to a series of residences with increasing levels of care: Hewitt Place, Mutchmore Lodge and eventually to Regina Pioneer Village, whose staff became like a second family to her and who went over and above the call of duty to comfort her and her family during her final days.

Evelyn is predeceased by her parents, Catherine and Balfour Brown, her sister Edna (1995), her husband, Ruel (1996), and her brother, Earl (1997). She is survived by all four of her children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren as well as her brother, Lloyd Brown (Barbara) of Vancouver, B.C. In addition, she is remembered by many nieces and nephews spread across the nation.
