Robert Alexander Belhumeur was born August 6, 1925 to Amable and Mary (Nee Pelletier) Belhumeur on their family farm near Ste. Marthe just over the Manitoba border. Robert was their second baby, but the oldest living of 16 children.

When Robert was 19, his father passed away suddenly, leaving Robert and his mother to look after the farm and 11 remaining siblings. Robert, along with the older children, took on the challenge. The wonderful work ethic that had been instilled in them enabled the family to provide for themselves well, and even to help some of their neighbours. Everyone was expected to do their part on the busy mixed farm. In time, they moved their farming operation more so into Saskatchewan.

In 1951 they moved to Welby, Sask. and Robert took up working for the CNR BB gangs. Here he gained much experience building and doing cement construction, which became useful for him when he eventually got a job at the then new Potash mine, called Sylvite, just 10 miles from Welwyn, Sask. Here at Welwyn, Robert built a house for himself, his mother and youngest sister.

After 25 years of service at the potash mine, Robert retired at the age of 65. Robert always felt the need to help and care for his mother and oversee his brothers and sisters. He remained single but acted as a father-figure to some of his nieces. During this time, Robert stayed busy, gardening, preserving fruits and vegetables, cleaning and mending as needed.

Robert was predeceased by his parents, Amable and Mary; six brothers, Charles, John, Amable Jr, Rene, Leo, and two infant babies, and four sisters, Germaine, Gilda, Rosine and Bertha. He leaves to mourn one brother, James and three sisters, Lora Turner, Olive (Jackie) Ross, and Marjorie Carter, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Moosomin, on Saturday, December 29, 2018. Memorial tributes in memory of Robert may be made to Strays That Can`t Pay, Box 252 Elkhorn, Man. R0M 0N0.
