Vernon Hugh Dauncey of Rocanville died, age 76, on May 3, 2019 at the South East Integrated Centre in Moosomin, his children nearby.

He is pre-deceased by his parents Hugh and Jessie, an infant sister, and his wife of 51 years, Therese (d. 2014). He leaves his only sibling Daryl (Bernadette) and family; THREE children, Darren (Deborah); Mike (Melanie) and children Ryan and Laine; Regan Cherfan (Norm) and children Noah and Halle.

Dad was born April 23, 1943 in Rocanville and lived his entire life there. Competitive as well as community minded, Vern (as most would call him) would become quite well known in the town and surrounding area. Known for a hell of a slap shot, his high school yearbook pegged him as a future NHL’er. If he wasn’t excelling at sports like hockey, track or curling—in which he skipped many a team to the winner’s circle—he was off golfing with friends for trophies and fun.

As a young man in the late 1950’s he set a provincial record in the javelin toss that held for almost 60 years in the Moosomin district until finally broken in 2017. He was happy to see it fall as “it was long enough”.

Dad would continue to enjoy curling and golf for the rest of his life, sharing these activities with mom and his many friends and acquaintances in and around Rocanville and on trips further abroad.

Action oriented from an early age and desiring to make a difference, he would join the Rocanville Fire Dep’t at age 14, eventually becoming Fire Chief, as well as organizer and member of the Kinsmen and Lions clubs during the 1960’s. Dedicated to improving Rocanville and Area, dad sat on many boards. An alderman for 12 years in the 1960’s and 70’s, he was honored to hold the mayors’ chair for eight more during most of the 1980’s. Helping spearhead many progressive projects and upgrades, dad was always quick to credit others on council and the very capable town workers for their many achievements in Rocanville during this time.

While all this was going on, dad—side by side with mom—would own and run the Rocanville Locker Plant and Liquor Store for 11 rewarding years. During the especially busy holiday seasons grandma Jessie and grandpa Hugh would pitch in slinging booze so he and mom could keep up with customer demands for all the various processing and cuts of meat required.

Dad very much enjoyed connecting with people and serving the community, so when he decided to hang up the apron he thought he’d try his hand at selling vehicles, something he had done for a while as a young man. This would lead to three satisfying and successful decades establishing relationships while helping put people behind the wheel of a new or used vehicle. If you talk to anyone in the Rocanville, Moosomin or Esterhazy area, chances are they’ve either bought a vehicle or two from dad or know someone who had.

Later on in life, dad and mom would take regular trips—often golfing along the way—to see their children and grandchildren in Alberta, B.C. and Ontario. They would also enjoy many a run up north to Elbow Lake where his brother Daryl and sister-in-law Bernie live. Good times fishing, quading and just relaxing filled their days there.

2014 was a watershed year for the family. Dad and mom celebrated a very memorable 50th wedding anniversary with the entire family in the beautiful Mexican Riviera. However, later that year mom would pass away from cancer, devastating the family. It took a little while, but life goes on, and dad got back into the swing of things again as best he could. Deciding it was time to retire, he began enjoying himself a little more and to spend more time connecting with his children by phone and on trips. Dad, we are glad you did. You were a very unique person, we are proud of you and we will miss you.

We wish to thank the entire staff at Long Term Care and Moosomin Hospital for the excellent care they provided dad and to dad’s friend Eileen who shared companionship with him in the last few years, continuing to be with him as his journey progressed.

A public service will be held at Nutrien Rocanville Community Hall, Friday, June 7, 2019, 2 pm. All are welcome to attend. Interment for family only at Webster cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a Children’s charity of your choice.
