Joan was born January 29, 1925 in Davonport, North Plymouth, England

She died peacefully in her sleep August 20, 2013 in Courtney B.C. at the age of 88 years.

Joan served in the armed forces in England during the Second World War where she met Maurice Bird. After the war she emigrated to Canada. She was not a "war bride," she paid her own way. She and Maurice were married in Moosomin, Saskatchewan where they raised their family.

Joan was the Moosomin Librarian for many years. She became a Canadian citizen in 1969.

After Maurice’s death Joan met and married Don Ashley, with whom she moved first to Victoria and then to Courtney, B.C.

Joan was predeceased by her infant son David Maurice, her first husband Maurice, (passed away May 18, 1993) and her second husband Don Ashley, (passed away October 20, 2012), and her daughter Susan Krienke, (passed away March 11, 1990).

She is survived by her sister Rose Andrews of Rochdale, England and family, her son David (Lynda) of Fernie, B.C., Norman (Breezy) of Halifax; her grandchildren Erin (Scott) Hildebrandt of Didsbury, Alberta, Cathy Bird (Jon Wiltzen) of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta; son-in-law Raymond Krienke (Kelly) of Fishing Lake, Saskatchewan, Luke (Meghan) Krienke of Langenburg, Saskatchewan, Jillian Krienke of Montreal, Quebec; her great-grandchildren, Jacob and Cadence Hildebrandt of Didsbury, Alberta. Further, Joan will be fondly remembered by Don’s children and grandchildren.

Her ashes have been interred in Courtney, B.C.
