Edwin Henry Heikkila, 87, of New Finland, Saskatchewan passed away at the Moosomin Hospital on January 6, 2021.

Edwin was born on August 24, 1933 and grew up in the Deerwood and Forest Farm districts in the New Finland area. The oldest of seven children, Edwin attended school until the age of 16 when he quit to help on the family farm. As a young man, Edwin worked as a hired hand for farmers in the New Finland and Qu’appelle Valley area. He especially enjoyed working in the valley as there wasn’t much opportunity for travel in those days. Edwin said that the valley itself seemed like a long way from home then.

He later worked in the lumber camps in Northern Ontario and worked construction for several years in Calgary, Alberta and eventually returned home to the family farm. After the death of his mother Matilda Heikkila in 1998, Edwin shared the family home with his brother Harry. Despite Edwin’s health problems in more recent years, he enjoyed his retirement years, and kept busy with gardening, wood cutting, reading and watching TV. Edwin loved having a good chat and there was always a cup of tea for visitors.

Edwin is survived by his siblings George (Carol) of Barons, Alberta, Edna (John) of Whitewood, Sask, Verna (Harold) of McCord, Sask, Harry of Whitewood, Sask and Doug (Janice) of Wapella, Sask and many nieces and nephews. Edwin’s never-ending supply of stories, political insights, humour and hearty laugh will be missed by everyone who knew him.

A private graveside service was held at the New Finland cemetery on January 12, 2021 at 2:00 pm with pastor Vivian Roberts (St. John’s Lutheran) presiding. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Moosomin Hospital for their excellent care and kindness as well as the Carscadden Funeral Chapel for all their help.
