It is with heavy hearts the family of Alfred George Hickie announce his passing on Friday, June 18, 2021 at the age of 79.

Alfred was born at the family farm home south of Melville, Saskatchewan, the second child of Aloysius (Alois) and Anna (Annie–nee Wihlidal) Hickie.

He attended Wallacetown country school and took his high schooling in Melville. After a year of university, he returned to Melville where he worked for Marshall Wells.

There he met, and in 1964 married, the love of his life, Marilyn Greer.

In 1965, he took a job with Monarch Life Insurance and moved to Regina where on September 17, Coreen was born. Selling life insurance was “not his bag” so in 1966 they moved to Esterhazy and Alfred took a job at IMC. On November 2, 1968 Warren was born in Esterhazy Hospital. Alfred took a job at Sylvite at Rocanville in 1971.

Alfred was a farmer at heart so in 1973 he and Marilyn purchased two quarters of land six miles west of Sylvite, moved their mobile home, and Rocanville has been home since.

In 1997, he retired to fulfill his dream of full-time farming and, as he loved curling, became caretaker and ice-maker of the curling rink. In 2008, he had a severe heart attack and after surgery hoped to continue life as normal but as his health declined he had to give up his dreams. Due to his ill health, Alfred and Marilyn sold the farm in 2017 and moved into Rocanville. In October of 2019, Alfred moved to long term care where he spent the rest of his days.

Alfred leaves to mourn, his wife Marilyn, daughter Coreen (Leslie) Jack of Tantallon area, granddaughter Monica (Kody) Beckett of Tantallon area, son Warren (Helen) Hickie of Rocanville, grandson Greer (Victoria) Hickie of Saskatoon, and granddaughter Delaney Hickie of Saskatoon. Two sisters, Agnes (Fernie) Schick of Allan and Alice Hickie of Melville. Sister-in-law Bev (Dwight) Baron of Moose Jaw and several nieces and nephews, cousins, neighbours and friends.

Alfred was predeceased by his parents Alois and Annie Hickie, grandson Mathew Hickie, nephew Perry Schick, his father-in-law Clifford Greer and his mother-in-law and step-father-in-law Clara and Ted Swaaben.

Alfred loved his family dearly and kept them busy on the farm. He enjoyed his grandchildren and was thankful they were close by. His passions were curling, the Blue Jays and the casino. Alfred and Marilyn travelled to many areas to attend curling events and ball games, as well as to many of the casinos in the country and the U.S. They also enjoyed tropical vacations with good friends or family.

A funeral farewell will be held at Carscadden Funeral Home in Moosomin on July 16, 2021 at 1:00 pm. There will be a visitation after the service prior to leaving for the interment in the Yorkton Memorial Gardens.

Memorial tributes in Alfred’s name may be made to SEICC Long Term Care Activities Department.
