She is also survived by her sister Merle (Ron) Coleman of Virden, Man., brother-in-law Howard Elliott of Washington state and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Gene met Vernon at a country dance and they were married in 1937. Soon after they took over the Hamilton family farm south of Wawota and she became active in the church and UCW as well as being an excellent cook and gardener. She worked hard helping Vernon on the farm and raising their children. In December 1963 they moved to Carlyle where she took in boarders and cooked at Camp Wabamasqua at White Bear Lake for four years. She opened up a bake shop called Gene’s Kitchen for a while and was matron at the RCMP jail for 11 years.

She loved to sing and belonged to the church choir and Moose Mountain Chorale. She belonged to the seniors’ centre where she enjoyed playing cards and visiting. She was always interested in her family and their activities and very seldom missed a Carlyle Senior hockey home game. She always stood behind the player’s box so she could give the boys encouragement when she felt they needed it!

Gene moved from her home to the Golden Heritage Court in Carlyle in 1990 and then in 2008 she moved to the Sunrise Villa in Maryfield for a short time. In February 2009 she moved to Deerview Lodge in Wawota where she remained until her death.

A celebration of Gene’s life was held in the Wawota United Church on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at 3 p.m., with Roy Bortolotto officiating. Interment was in the Wawota cemetery. Memorial tributes may be made to Deerview Lodge in Wawota or to the Wawota United Church, Special Projects Fund, in memory of Gene.
