It is with heavy hearts the family of Dorothy Betty (Marshall) Harris announces her passing at the age of 92 at the Grenfell and District Pioneer Home in Grenfell after a brief stay. We celebrated her life with family and friends on Friday, November 28, 2014 at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew’s United Church, Maryfield, Sask. with Reverend Roy Bortolotto officiating.

Mom was born on April 11, 1922 on the family farm east of Strongfield in a house her dad had built.

She did all of her schooling in Strongfield and later took a hairdressing course in Saskatoon. Mom stayed at the Y and that is where she met many of her life-long friends. It was through a friend that she first met a handsome young soldier from Ryerson called Reuben Harris.

Jobs weren’t very plentiful in hairdressing so Mom moved to Moose Jaw and took a business course at M.J. Davidson Business College. She later got a job in Regina at the Allen Blair Memorial Cancer Clinic as a receptionist in Admitting.

Mom often spoke of those days with fond memories and of her friends Jean Cripps, Betty Clark, Irene McDougall, and Verna Labelle going to the Hostess Club to play table tennis or cards or to go dancing. Betty Clark and Mom would play tennis on the courts behind the Parliament buildings then have their picnic lunch on the grounds.

Reuben had been stationed at various locations in the east but did get back a few times to Regina until he was deployed to England in September 1943. They were, from that point on, able to communicate by "letter grams" until his return in December 1945. On July 6, 1946 Mom and Dad were married in the same house she was born in and then they honeymooned in Banff.

Married life started on the farm two miles east of Ryerson. They had good friends and neighbors with whom they enjoyed many laughs and good times. They went to dances in Mair and Fairlight, curling in Ryerson on the one sheet of ice, and sports days in the various surrounding towns. Many memories were made over the years.

Due to Dad’s health they moved to Maryfield in the mid ‘60s. Several moves were made over the years but in 1982 they returned to Maryfield and then settled in Moosomin meeting other new groups of friends.

Mom and Dad were able to enjoy a few trips: England, Maritimes, B.C., Florida, California and several camping trips. Their real enjoyment came from watching their grandchildren’s activities. Whether it be hockey, swimming, baseball, or skating, they loved it all.

They made a full circle and took up residence again in Maryfield at Sunrise Villa in 2008. After 64 years of married life, Dad passed away in 2010. Mom continued to live at the Villa. Poor health caused her to move to Grenfell and District Pioneer Home in November 2014 and Mom passed away November 22, 2014.

Mom is survived by her son Dean (Marilyn) and their children: Carla (Warwick Dawes) Holly, Hayden and Ava; Tyler (Nicole) Austin; Greg; Kevin (Steph); her daughter Lorie Heshka and her children: Trevor and his daughter Savanah; Wendy (Bryan Fink) Marshall and Sadie; Bryan (Tracy) Bronson, Hunter and Countlyn; her daughter Elaine (Todd) Robinson and their children: Bret and Clint (Brittany Evans-Davies); her sister Charlotte Reimer; sisters-in-law Ida Harris, Lenore Harris, Eleanor Verleye, Daisy Harris, Connie Harris, and Judy (Bill) Duce; and many nieces and nephews.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Reuben; her parents Robert and Elizabeth Marshall; brothers and sisters-in-law Allen and Mildred Marshall; Robert and Grace Marshall; brother-in-law Wes Reimer; niece Jean Starzynski; her parents-in-law John and Florence Harris; step-mother-in-law Elsie Leader; brothers- and sister-in-law Reg and Audrey Harris, Norman Harris, and Ralph Harris; and nephew Alvin Harris.

We would like to thank Dr. Kerkhoff and Dr. Plewes, the staff at Moosomin hospital, the staff at Sunrise Villa and the Grenfell and District Pioneer Home for looking after Mom.

Thank you to her many friends in Maryfield and Moosomin for going that extra mile for Mom and thank you to the friends and family that helped with, and participated in, Mom’s service.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Sunrise Villa or the cemetery fund in Maryfield.
