Alex Bruce of Moosomin, who passed away last year, left money in his will for both the Moosomin and District Health Care Foundation and Moosomin’s swimming pool.

A bequest of $100,000 was left for the Health Care Foundation, and $50,000 was left for the pool.

Mayor Larry Tomlinson is a member of the Health Care Foundation board.

“It’s very nice to get a donation like that,” he said. “It’s awesome. We spent a lot of money at the hospital this year, so this is a huge help. I don’t think there were any specifications on where it was to go to, so it will go into regular funds, and wherever we need it, that’s where it will go.”

Wendy Lynd is the secretary-treasurer of the Health Care Foundation.

“We get at least a couple a year but not usually this size,” she says. We will discuss it at the May board meeting. We didn’t get any indication of what he wanted it to go toward, so we’re trying to find family to talk to, so we know what he intended.”

Moosomin Recreation Director Mike Schwean said he found out about the bequest for the pool when employees of the law office dropped a cheque off.

“We haven’t decided what we’re going to do yet, but there are a few smaller things that need to be done, and we will look at something bigger, we’re just not sure what yet. We want to do something for the kids, but we don’t want to rush into it. It’s certainly nice for us, it’s money we would never have had otherwise—it’s fantastic.”

Schwean said the rec department has never before received a bequest like this. “It’s never happened with us before, so for us, it’s fantastic, and we are really, really thankful. I hope his family knows how thankful we are—this was a tremendous donation.”
