Moosomin town council has received a request to rezone property on Celebration Drive from Commercial to Industrial to accommodate a new bulk fuel plant and cardlock for UFA.

UFA is wanting to build on the parcel of land directly west of the Celebration Ford dealership, between Highway 1 and Celebration Driver, with vehicles accessing the site off of Celebration Drive.

Council discussed the rezoning request at their meeting and decided that because the land is zoned commercial, they would like to consult with the other businesses in that area before making any decisions.

They also decided to invite UFA to a council meeting to hear a bit more about the project.

Main Street sidewalk being resurface with rubberstone
Council passed a motion to resurface one block of sidewalk, on the east side of Main Street, from the Royal Bank to the Uptown Motel entirely in grey rubberstone.

The town had budgeted $75,000 for sidewalk replacement this year, with the block of rubberstone costing approximately $60,000.

The decision was made to go with rubberstone as it is much cheaper and less messy than putting in concrete, which requires jackhammering the existing sidewalk before replacing it. Council also noted that other communities have used the product and are happy with it, and that for $60,000 they are able to repair a much larger area (the whole block) than if they went with traditional concrete which costs a lot more.

The work is being done by B&A Holdings.

Rec projects coming along
Moosomin Rec Director Mike Schwean reported on the progress of a number of recreation projects.

He said that the finishing touches are taking place at the Terry Lynd basketball court, with bleachers and nets and fencing due to go in soon.

He said there are four new score clocks that have been put up at the ball diamonds, and at the new pickleball courts, a sun shade is being built.

He told council he has had a lot of positive comments and emails about the new pickleball courts at Bradley Park, and that people are happy to have them.

Lots of trees infected with Dutch Elm
Town foreman Mike Stein said the town crew had been spending some time this summer cutting down trees affected with Dutch Elm Disease and grinding the stumps. He says there are lots of trees in town that are affected, and estimated there were between 50-70 trees in town that still need to come down.
Council has been talking about options for replacing the trees.

Sportsplex parking lot paving
Council passed a motion to expand the paved parking lot south of the Sportsplex. The town will be paving an area 50 by 250 feet for a cost of $82,901.

Impressed with Moosomin
CAO Paul Listrom read an email that was sent to the mayor from Ray Merrill from Sunnyvale, Texas saying how much he loved being in Moosomin.

“I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed meeting you in the GMC dealership and spending time in your wonderful town,” he said.

“We had a wonderful breakfast in the coffee shop on main. Everyone was so pleasant. Great lunch in the Red Barn with same attitudes. The pharmacy is the cleanest and most friendly I have ever been in. We saw some ladies going in with all smiles to something directly across the street from the post office.

We saw someone watering the beautiful hanging baskets lining the streets. Folks were waving at the person doing the watering and were not aggravated by her truck parked in the road. No trash was seen in or outside of your town.

Homes, regardless of value, still showed pride. You and your community should be proud of your town. I believe it will continue to thrive.”
