The Town of Moosomin will host its community-wide garage sale on May 30, with residents invited to take part from 9 am to 4 pm.
Assistant Recreation Director Angela Thorn said the event is being held the same day as the Moosomin Walk for Alzheimer’s, with organizers hoping the added activity around town will encourage more people to attend both events.
“There will be people out and about in town anyway, so it might be another attraction and another way to get more people coming to it,” Thorn said.
So far, 12 households have registered to participate in the garage sale. Thorn estimates around 25 homes took part last year.
Organizers are also planning a mystery prize feature to encourage residents to visit multiple garage sales throughout the day. A few participating sales will have hidden prizes or small giveaways supplied through Moosomin Economic Development.
“We’re not advertising where they will be,” Thorn said. “People will just have to check out the sales and see if they can find them.”
Thorn said events like the community-wide garage sale help reduce waste by encouraging people to reuse items rather than send them to the landfill.
“One person’s junk is somebody else’s treasure,” she said. “Especially with kids’ toys and things like that—sometimes there’s nothing wrong with them, they’ve just outgrown them.”
She added that garage sales can also provide affordable shopping opportunities for families.
Residents who would like their sale included on the official map and list of sales that day are encouraged to register with Thorn at the town office before the week of the event. Maps will be printed and made available the week prior to May 30.
To register a garage sale, residents can contact the Thorn at the Town Office at 306-435-3622 or at 306-435-2988. There is no fee to participate.
The Town of Rocanville will also be hosting its annual town-wide garage sale on May 23.
Andrea Logan, recreation director for the Town of Rocanville, said 10 homes have registered for the event so far, with more expected to sign up closer to the date. In addition to the household sales, St. Alphonsus Church will also be holding a rummage and bake sale that day.
Logan said the community has hosted town-wide garage sales for several years, although there may have been the occasional year skipped. In the past, the sales were held during community day celebrations, but organizers later decided to give the garage sale its own dedicated day. “We usually have about the same amount every year,” Logan said. “This year seems to be a little less, but we also have two weeks to go before the town-wide garage sale actually takes place, and I’m sure we’ll have last-minute registration.”
A map showing participating locations will be created and shared on the recreation department’s social media page, with printed copies also available for shoppers.
Residents wanting to be included on the map must register by noon on May 21 by contacting the recreation office at 306-645-2164. Logan said the annual event helps attract visitors to the community.
“When you hear of a town-wide garage sale, it is incentive for people to come visit your town,” she said. “We’re bringing more people into the community.”
