Cory Smith of Esterhazy has been charged with one count of theft over $5,000 in a theft involving the Esterhazy Minor Hockey Association. Smith was arrested and released last week, and will appear in Esterhazy Provincial Court on December 9.

In an email to hockey parents, the Esterhazy Minor Hockey Association said they had been a victim of theft, and had removed their treasurer, Smith, from the board of directors. Smith’s name was also removed from the EMHA’s website.

The EMHA said that Smith no longer had access to any financial resources. The EMHA also suspended the ability for any individual to do electronic funds transfers, and said they will be returning to the practice of using cheques with dual signatures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

EMHA president Glen Simon said the board began investigating the theft in early July before handing the investigation over to the RCMP.

Smith has been involved with the board for two seasons, including one year as the treasurer.

“We are letting the RCMP deal with it going forward,” said Simon.

“I think there is a large amount of disappointment within the board and from the families and parents that it happened.

“The feedback that we have got so far is that they are pleased with how we have handled it. As a board we investigated it to the point that we could and then it was handed over to the RCMP.”
