Charles Norman Hedison, passed away on March 20, 2025, at the Health Science Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Norman was born in Willen, Manitoba on July 31, 1932, and was predeceased by his parents Hermon and Bertha Hedison, his brother Jimmie and sister-in-law Mary of McAuley/Virden, sister Kay and brother-in-law Bill Grant of Miniota, sister Barb and brother-in-law Ron Fergusson of Virden, and brother-in-law Alex Pressey of Winnipeg, nephews-in-law Ron Elliott and Barry Turgeon and two infant siblings. Norman was also predeceased by life long-friends Arnold Minish and Huntley Lewis.

Norman is survived by his sister Joyce Pressey of Winnipeg, nieces and nephews: Dorothy Elliott, Linda (Dennis) Mallett, Donald Grant, Joan (Randy) Lund, Diane (Cliff) Mangrove, Marion (Dave) Grant, Cindy (Neil) Gordon, Heather (Guy) Tessier, Chris (Diana) Pressey, numerous great- and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins in England, and the Minish and Lewis families.
Norman attended Rose Lea School until Grade 8, and completed his Grades 9-11 in McAuley, boarding in McAuley the first two years, then living at home for Grade 11 as his family had moved from Willen to McAuley. He started Brandon College in the 1950/51 school year, and was awarded multiple scholarships that year, one being for highest aggregate marks at Brandon College, United College, St. John’s College, and University of Manitoba in 1st year Arts. In 1954, he graduated with his Bachelor of Arts, and after permit substitute teaching for a year or two, returned to Brandon College and received his Bachelor of Education in 1958, then taught at several schools in Western Manitoba. Around 1964/65, Norman made a career change to farming, returning to the family farm at McAuley and also bought land at Willen, near the original Hedison homestead where he was born.

Norman enjoyed watching sports, local teams in-person and on TV, and enjoyed curling, golf, hunting, camping, snowmobiling, and fishing. In 2000, Norman built a cottage at Lake of the Prairies, Manitoba, where he could fish year-round and on any day that he wanted, which was often three times a day! He very proudly displayed his 12 Master Angler certificates in his cottage.

Norman was an avid card player, bridge being one of his younger year favourites, and ‘Buy or Die’ rummy a favourite often played at his cottage. Norman enjoyed travelling across Canada, through the USA and into Mexico. He also travelled to England, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii, enjoying all these experiences immensely.

In 2016, at age 84, Norman moved to the Riverwood Square Retirement Home in Winnipeg, which became his home for over eight years. He became a member of the Resident Council and thoroughly enjoyed the many activities RWS offered. Norman was very proud of his Wii Bowling 1st place finish which he won at age 90 with his 94-year-old bowling partner! Their competition also won the ‘RWS Oscar’ for ‘Best Event.’

Norman’s family would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to the management and staff and fellow residents of RWS for their excellent care, support and especially their friendship to Norman during his eight-plus years at RWS. We would also like to thank the medical staff at St. Boniface General Hospital, Victoria Hospital, and Health Science Centre for their care during Norman’s short illness.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at McAuley Rink, McAuley, Manitoba on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at 2 pm CDT. Following a fellowship lunch, a private ceremony for the scattering of Norman’s ashes will take place.

In lieu of flowers and/or sympathy cards, the family encourages you to call a friend or family member to say hello or should you choose, invites donations to the Heart and Stroke Association or the Alzheimer Society.

Thou his presence is gone forever
And his hands we can not touch,
Still we have so many memories
Of the one we loved so much.
His memory is our keepsake
With which we will never part,
God has him in his keeping
We have him in our hearts.
