It is with great sadness that Newell’s family announces the passing of their father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. Newell passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 21, 2025.
Newell was born May 2, 1933 on the family homestead near Maryfield, Sask. to Davis and Minnie (Martin) Dixon. Newell grew up on the family farm, which he farmed until his 60s, and attended Dayton School.
Newell married Rita Meadows on November 9, 1963. They had three daughters and raised them on the family farm. He instilled respect for family, friends and neighbours in his children and grandchildren. Newell enjoyed coaching his daughters in curling and softball.
In Newell’s spare time, he enjoyed curling, playing softball and golf. After years of playing sports, he became a softball umpire. He spent many hours in his workshop building bookshelves, picnic tables or working on renovations for the house.
Newell was a member of the Maryfield Lion’s Club, a board member for Sunset Villas in Maryfield and also a member and President of the Moosomin Seniors Club. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and was always willing to participate in good natured jokes or pranks.
He is survived by his daughters Laurel (Derek) DeGoeij, Lana (Ken) Renaud, and Loretta Porter, grandchildren Tim (Shannon) Senko, Katlynn (Cory) Smith, Nicole (Daniel) Holmes, Allen (Karley) Porter, and Sydney Porter, great-grandchildren Cooper, Airah, Kailen, Paiten, Adalynn, Boaz, Nora and Naomi; niece Marlene (Doug) Hanson, brother-in-law Raymond (Gloria) Meadows, sister-in-law Marj Meadows; and Doug (Carmen) Dixon, who filled the role of the son that he never had—as well as countless cousins and family members.
He was predeceased by his wife Rita (Meadows), parents Davis and Minnie Dixon, sister and brother-in-law Della and Elmer Newlove.
A very special thank you to the staff at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home for the wonderful care Newell received.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025 in Moosomin, Sask. with the venue and time to be confirmed at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Southeast Integrated Care Centre, Moosomin or to the Yorkton & District Nursing Home, Yorkton as gifts of remembrance. Condolences may be left for the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com
