Phyllis Katherine “Toots” Lawrence, formerly of Fleming, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully at Parkland Place Care Home in Melfort, Saskatchewan on Tuesday, August 12, 2025 at the age of 93.
She was born on November 9, 1931 at Rouleau, Saskatchewan, third child to parents Harry and Anna Ross.
The family later moved to Broadview, Saskatchewan where she completed her schooling.
After Grade 12 graduation she enrolled in a stenographer’s course in Winnipeg, doing very well but didn’t care for it, so she then took teacher training.
Her first school was a country school near Kipling, Saskatchewan for one year, then she moved to Coverdale School near Moosomin, Saskatchewan.
She boarded with the Foy family where she met Harold Lawrence, who was working for the Foys. They were married on July 17, 1952 in Fleming United Church. They lived on the Flynn farm in the Stanley district and she taught school at Inglis, Manitoba for a time. They then moved to the home farm, and later into the town of Fleming where she taught Kindergarten at Fleming School for many years.
She was a member of the UCW, Legion Ladies Auxiliary, taught Sunday School and worked at the rink and hall events. She is survived by two sons, Jeff of Dinsmore, Saskatchewan and Dale (Arnelda) of Melfort, Saskatchewan, three granddaughters Amanda, Jamie (Evan), and Ashley, one sister Mae (Roly) Oakenfold of Saskatoon, two si ters-in-law Gladys McNeill of Virden, Manitoba and Gwen Enns of Spruce Grove, Alberta, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Harold, her parents, sister Fay, brothers Jack, Don, Gerald, and Dennis, and relatives in the Lawrence family.
A graveside service was held on Wednesday, August 20 at 1 pm at the Fleming Cemetery, followed by lunch and fellowship at the Fleming Community Hall.
