Independent investigation requested for death of Kennedy woman

Woman died Monday night in Broadview RCMP custody

The Saskatchewan RCMP is asking for an independent external investigation following the in-custody death of a 36-year-old Kennedy woman in Broadview RCMP custody Monday night.

On Monday, November 8, 2021 at approximately 9 p.m., Broadview RCMP received a report of a distraught individual in the town of Kennedy.

The individual, a 36-year-old woman, was taken into police care under the Mental Health Act. Shortly after, the woman went into medical distress.

EMS was already at the scene and transported the woman to hospital. She was declared deceased at approximately 2:30 a.m. on November 9, 2021. The name of the deceased is not being released at this time.

In accordance with the RCMP Act, the Saskatchewan RCMP has requested that Moose Jaw Police Service conduct an independent external investigation into the circumstances surrounding the in-custody death of the woman.

The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is involved in the investigation.

In addition, the RCMP has requested that the Ministry of Justice appoint an independent observer.
