Moosomin’s Walk for Alzheimer’s is this Saturday, May 30. Walkers are encouraged to meet at the Legion for 10 am to register. The walk will begin at 11 am with a barbecue lunch provided at the Legion to follow.
Rene Whelpton of the Moosomin Alzheimer’s Society and organizer of the walk says the group is excited for this year’s walk and encourages all community members and businesses to participate.
“The walk is this upcoming Saturday, May 30. As of right now, on our website, we have nine walkers registered, but we also know that this community shows up at the last minute.
“We have $5,600 in donations so far. Most of the donations come on the day of the walk. This year we have a donor who is willing to match up to $50,000, so the $5,600 we have raised so far is well over $10,000 now, so that’s fantastic.”
Local health businesses
Welcomed to Wellness Expo
Whelpton explains this year the committee is also hosting a Wellness Expo at the Legion on May 30.
“We are also having a Wellness Expo, and we’re asking local health groups and businesses to bring a table, and help us give resources and information on how we can age well. We’ve got at least five businesses doing that already.
“We have a Facebook page that you can go for more information. I want to thank the Spectator for all the fantastic promotion of our event each year. It’s been wonderful. We’ve been working really hard to promote the walk with our Facebook page, and the Spectator has been great helping with promoting. As well as MLA Kevin Weedmark for his promotion of the walk on his Facebook page.

“I was really privileged to go to the Legislature with him two weeks ago, and hear him speak about our committee and see a little bit of what he does.”
Community support
Whelpton says she appreciates the community’s support each year.
“We know that our community has a huge heart for community members and causes that are dear to our hearts. My family has been the recipient of the kindness of this community as well.”
She says organizers encourage local businesses to participate by registering as a team in the walk.
“We are trying to encourage businesses to create a team with their staff, and to walk with us, and hopefully donate funds as well. If your business comes, wear your own shirts, wear your own swag. We want to take pictures of all the businesses that come as a team. We’re going to put them on our Facebook page, and they might even reach the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan’s website too.
“The funds go toward research, and we are working hard to educate the provincial office that the resources need to come back to our town as well, for programs, resources, supports, so we’re continually working on that.
“Our little town has opened corporate’s eyes to how a little town can fundraise. We’re not like the city, and we do things differently, and they are thrilled with us, they’re proud of us.”

Barbecue after walk
The Walk for Alzheimer’s starts at 11am Saturday followed by a barbecue.
“We are going to have a hot dog barbecue by donation after the walk. We are thankful the Thorn family offered to do it and so people can stay longer, visit, and learn more. We want to develop relationships with people, those of us that have similar experiences with dementia. We want to offer support, and then there is also more time to tour the wellness tables inside the Legion.
“We want this to be a success, and we are praying hard for good weather, and the town-wide garage sale will be on that day. There will be lots of people out, so just come by, go for a short little two kilometre walk with us, get some snacks and some barbecue as well. I encourage you all to come out. It’ll take max an hour of your time, but we would just love to see you out there, visit, and it’s always fun.”
