The Town of Moosomin’s annual community cleanup is this Thursday, June 4, with extended hours designed to give residents more flexibility to participate. Volunteers can pick up garbage bags, gloves and other supplies at the Moosomin Legion any time between 9 am and 7 pm before heading out to help clean up areas around the community.
All day clean-up
offers more flexibility
“We changed it so it’s more of an all-day thing rather than having a specific time. What we’ve done is made it open for an entire day and you can go and do it when it works for you,” said Mayor Murray Gray.
“I hope that means that if somebody has an hour during the day, they’ll come and help out. Just put a little bit of time in whether it’s after a day’s work or on their lunch break.
“Every year we try to listen to the residents and find a way that gets as many people out as possible. It’s actually a rewarding experience if you have never done it before. It feels good to walk down a ditch and look back and see that the garbage is gone. It’s a small task, it doesn’t take long and is not overly physically demanding, but the rewards are very worthwhile.”
Community effort
Moosomin town councillor Andie Hodgson is involved with organizing the town-wide cleanup.
“The idea behind it is that our community spaces belong to all of us, and we want everyone to take pride in where we live and help keep our community welcoming, beautiful and enjoyable for everyone,” she says.
“We will have a check-in at the Legion patio this year, weather permitting, or inside the Legion if needed, from 9 am to 7 pm. People can pick up free garbage bags and gloves, and there will be complimentary coffee and water available sponsored by Moosomin Tim Hortons. We will also have a map showing areas that have already been cleaned so we’re not duplicating work,” said Hodgson.
“People can pick up their bags and supplies at the Legion. Once the bags are full, they can simply tie them and leave them where they are. They do not need to bring the garbage back to the Legion. The purpose of checking in is so we know which areas are being cleaned and where garbage bags will need to be collected afterward.
“It is a come-and-go event, so whether you volunteer for an hour or the full day, every little effort makes a difference in helping us keep our community clean and enjoyable for everyone.”
School participation
“The school has been participating for quite some time, both the elementary school and the high school. We’re lucky to have Dairy Queen sponsoring the town-wide cleanup again. They provide Dilly Bars for all the school-age children who participate,” says Hodgson.
“The students do an immense amount of work. They don’t just clean school yards; they also help in public spaces like Bradley Park and many of the ditches and walking routes around town. It provides a lot of manpower and shows responsibility in working together to create a cleaner, stronger and more connected community. It also ties into some of the environmental education the students receive.
“Each year participation differs, but we have had various community groups get involved. The goal is really just to get everyone engaged,” says Hodgson.
“Many hands make the work lighter. A lot of people already clean up around their homes or businesses, but this is an opportunity to support the broader community. It also allows us to look at the entire community and identify areas that may be getting missed or areas where we are seeing larger amounts of litter.
“Providing garbage bags and organizing collection helps remove barriers for residents and makes participation very easy.”
Areas of concern
“Some of the areas where we commonly see litter are along Broadway Avenue, and particularly near Tim Hortons and the car wash. We also see litter around the Communiplex, along some roadways and around the school because of traffic patterns and people walking to get food.
“Sometimes litter accumulates behind businesses because garbage gets caught against buildings. A lot of it comes down to wind patterns and traffic patterns,” says Hodgson.
Taking pride
in the community
“We’re also participating in Communities in Bloom again, and this cleanup is a nice way to help prepare for that. Communities in Bloom is about taking pride in our community. It gives us a chance to focus on beautification projects and improvements that make Moosomin a better place for everyone to live.
“If people want to pick up garbage outside of the cleanup day, they are welcome to do so. They would just need to dispose of the garbage themselves because collection will only be organized as part of the event,” says Hodgson.
“It’s wonderful to have an actual day dedicated to the cleanup. It’s a reminder for people, but it’s also about bringing the community together. You don’t have to do it by yourself. You can participate with a friend, your family, your co-workers or on your lunch break.
“It just helps get everyone a little more engaged.”
