With the Pipe Si Cana Games drawing ever closer, golfers have a chance to be part of history. Indoor golf will be one of the sports featured during the Dec. 16-17 winter games and will have the honour of being the first indoor golf tournament recognized by Golf Saskatchewan.
“We’ve been at this for a couple of years,” said Town of Moosomin Parks & Recreation Director Mike Schwean, who added planning such an event had actually begun just prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We have four simulators with over 100 courses on them around the world,” he said. “We haven’t picked the course yet, we’ll do that in the next week or so.”
It will be a busy two days at those simulators with Saturday events including the Open Tournament, the Ladies, plus the Mens and Ladies Champions Tours (55+). Sunday will see the Four-Person Scramble, Mens, Ladies, and Champions Tour.
“For Saturday, it’s individual so we have Men’s Open, Men Seniors, Ladies Open, Ladies Seniors, so we’ll gear the men’s course a little longer, a little tougher course and then we’ll shorten it up a bit for the seniors and ladies as well,” Schwean explained.
Spaces for the weekend of warm indoor golf are sure to fill up quickly, so early registration is encouraged.
“We have limited spots,” Schwean said. “For Saturday, we have 32 spots open for the Men’s and we have 24 spots open for the Seniors Ladies Open and Seniors. There’s room for 56 on Saturday and then room for 16 teams on Sunday.”
In addition to the golf action, pickleball will take place on Saturday, volleyball on Sunday and hockey throughout the weekend. While events involving snow were originally anticipated, the oddly warm conditions (so far this winter) have put those plans on pause.
