The Moosomin Kinettes are preparing for their annual Santa Parade and Food Drive, set for this Sunday, December 21.

“I think this is the fifth year, but last year of course we cancelled it was around -40 degrees. It started because of Covid-19, we wanted everyone to see Santa and have fun since no one could really do Santa pictures in person, so we decided to do a parade,” said Tracy Russell with the Moosomin Kinettes.

“It’s nice. Lot’s of times I think we have had over 20 floats in the parade. We really want to get more of the community involved, more businesses. We would like to have a lot more than we have had previous years. The first year, I think because everyone was so excited, it was very full but then it kind of dwindled, but it is hard to make a float in the winter. We hope to have more businesses go in this year. We have a few new participants, Kenosee Lake Bible camp is going to come. Hopefully we can get a lot more people even if it’s from surrounding communities.”

This year’s food drive will support the Moosomin Food Share, which Russell said is serving a growing number of clients.

“The Food Bank has around 90 clients to feed at around $75 per client,” said Tracy. “The season can be challenging for donors. It’s hard too because the school does a week of food collection, so we know it’s tough for people to give again, but we would like to see people donate if they can.

“Usually around Christmas there is a lot more food needed just because they are trying to give clients ham and potatoes and everything they need for Christmas hampers. Samantha Campbell (with the Food Share) did say that she likes to remind people that everyone is ‘just one bad life altering moment away from using the food bank,’ so she hopes people can still give even though everyone is still of tight for money,” said Russell.

Russell says people watching the parade can contribute by leaving donations along the parade route or dropping them off at the local food share.

“People wanting to donate can leave their donations along the road, and usually one of us Kinnettes will be walking and picking it up and put it on our trailer. They can leave it along the side of the road, or some people will walk out and give it to us. As long as it’s on the side of the road we will pick it up.”

The parade will begin with marshalling at the MCC parking lot.

“We are marshalling at the MCC parking lot. At 6:30 pm is when people can start getting lined up, and then at 7 pm the parade starts. We hope lots more businesses will join in and make it big,” Russell said.

“The route is the same as last time. We are heading east down Wright Road, through the hospital parking lot, west on Broadway Avenue and south down Main Street.”
