Saskatchewan’s provincial budget includes $8.47 billion in health care funding, the highest level in the province’s history.
Moosomin–Montmartre MLA Kevin Weedmark spoke about the budget during a Moosomin Chamber of Commerce meeting.
Weedmark said one change involves the community contribution required for new health care facilities under the Patients First Plan.
“Everyone remembers when communities had to raise 35 per cent of the cost of building a hospital. It was a long and difficult process,” he said. “Mike helped organize three record-setting hockey games that raised a million dollars. Since then, the required community share has dropped from 35 per cent to 20 per cent, and now to 10 per cent. That makes a difference for communities like Grenfell, which is building a new facility, and for communities going forward.”
Weedmark also spoke about the Patient Medical Home Program.
“The Moosomin Family Practice Centre has been a leader in collaborative care,” he said. “This program is designed to support practices like that.”
The budget includes funding for six new positions, equivalent to 6.2 full-time staff, in Moosomin. A total of $768,000 has been allocated to the Moosomin Family Practice Centre to support physicians and allow for the hiring of additional allied health professionals.
The budget also includes an expansion of medical training. The number of seats at the College of Medicine will increase by 20 to 128, while residency positions will increase to 160.
“We’ve seen how much of a difference the residency program has made in Moosomin,” Weedmark said.
Municipal revenue sharing will total $392 million this year, an increase of eight per cent.
The Town of Moosomin received $819,000 in revenue sharing last year and is expected to receive $893,000 this year.
“This is funding that municipalities can use based on their own priorities,” Weedmark said.
